Why can't white stylists cut black people's hair?

I contacted a salon to price a hair cut and was told that they did not do black people's hair (I asked). What's the difference? They wouldn't have had to wash it, just cut it dry. I'm new to this town, coming from a larger city I guess I have a lot to learn.

I've often wondered that myself. I'm mixed- black and white-so I don't have hair like either races it's a nice curly mix, but when white stylists see all the curls they get scared, which makes no sense because white people have curly hair too!

yes it happenns i went into one for mine they wouldnt do it either i just needed it trimmed washed and a good stly but well. i do understand though coz texture of hair is different dont get angry its normal. black hair has always been a problem its better they dont mess i will rather have them not do it if they cant take it easy its normal even the other way round

Im a hairstylist from Maine and while i was in school they never taught us how to do it ...Why i dont know but i have a few "black" people come in and i have to be honest and say im sorry but i dont know how.... ethnic hair is very hard to cut very curly and course.... I do wish i knew because im loosing a lot of clientel....

I never heard of that. Very strange. Not being a hairdresser, I guess I wouldn't understand. I'm sure it takes a certain talent or training, because of the texture, etc... but you'd think that would be part of their school.

It depends on the stylist and where he or she went to school.

I went to a JVS in a small town in Ohio. There was a small black population and we just weren't taught how to do black hair. I have been to a few hair shows but they aren't usually hands on and so I really don't have the experience to do black hair and therefore I wouldn't do it, I don't do anyones hair if I'm unsure. So in short the answer is 'cause white people dont know how.

I think it is mostly because the majority of the time they are trained on white people's hair. Even the doll heads they use have that type of hair. Black people's hair is usually a completely different texture and type of hair which they are pretty much scared to work with. On one hand I can see how they may be nervous but its still hair and it gets cut the same way.

The salon you contacted shouldnt be saying the do not cut black peoples hair. It would kinda make me mad and almost like they were discriminating against my hair type, ya know. Not cool.

I've been told, as a matter of fact by Black people themselves, that the texture of Black hair is just different and styled in ways that only someone with experience and expertise in cutting it can really do it the right way. Try looking in the Yellow pages of your phonebook and you should be able to find a Black stylist, no problem. Good luck, at least you've got hair.

um i'm white and a hairstylist and i've cut many black people hair and they love it...its not that hard...and cutting it dry is very easy...so don't single it out, its might just be the city you live in...so get out of hickville

well first reason might be they are racists. alot of racists things go along with white and black americans. just deal with it. usually when you move to a more smaller town that what happens. the second reason might be of the black persons hair style. it might have its difficult way of styleing, and the white hairdresser only knows how to cut white peoples style. if you know what i mean

It is different to cut a black persons hair because the hair behaves and falls differently because we have a different hair texture than white people. There is a science to it believe me!

I find it funny that i am saying this but I am 22years old and the woman that has been doing my hair (relaxing, washing, cutting - you name it) is a white lady with red hair - She only does black womens hair for that matter (she has a malatto daugher though). However, she has a full understanding of African American women's hair. She knows more than I do at times! It's scary but I can vouch for her talent because my hair is ridiculously thick and runs down to the middle of my back - and I naturally have nappy hair unrelaxed- really nappy girl! Many people think that my hair is fake but I can proudly say it's all mine because of her and how she cares for my hair, as you know how hard it can be for us sistahs to grow our hair at times! Just wanted to share my uncommon experience with my caucasian hair dresser of many years! :o)

our hair is different! It's just like that! Ive been told the same by some white stylist! They just don't learn how to do it! I have a stylist that specialize in all hair types and she's black! most black people go to black stylist because they know our hair! I saw my god sister's hair after she got her hair cut by a white person and she cried and had to get her hair cut again buy my stylist! So be very careful of the one's who say they can! Look at their work see some samples!

hi! i am a hairdresser from bellaire,ohio. it is a very small town i went to a trade school and in this program they do not teach you how to do black hair! but i have always wanted to learn! i have a friend who has a biracial daughter and she is teaching me how to take care of her hair. she takes her to a black stylist who showed me how to cut her hair it is not as hard as i thought it was but you will have to watch who you go to i would say your best bet it to find a salon that does black hair for your benifit ! white people are just not tought how to do black hair! good luck i hope you find a great hairdresser!
