That being said, the areas associated with getting the world out of the Dark Ages were in Europe. (Caucasians--Italians, English) They were the ones who commissioned all of the artwork that you see today.

You are referring to an artifact of the USA--please realize that, despite what you might think, the USA is NOT the complete total of all there is in the world. In "Eastern" Christianity, Christ is usually portrayed with dark/olive skin and brown hair and eyes. Indeed, this is the norm for portraying Him in any part of the world that is not unduly influenced by American protestantism.

Because of the area you are in. It is actually rather traditional for people to portray Jesus as being the same as themselves. Thus, in Europe where people are fair skinned Jesus is fair skinned. In the Mediterranean where people are olive skinned, he is too. In Africa, where the vast majority of people are rather black, he is too. I've even seen a few Native-American Jesuses.

However, I've only seen a handful of Asian ones, not sure exactly why that is.

Of course, particular sects might insist on a particular interpretation despite the area in which the worshippers are living. Thus, you can have a white Jesus in a black church, an olive skinned Jesus in a white church, and so on.

we know that in the ancient world (greece, italy and the countries adjacent to the mediterranean) the main gods worshipped in the three or four hundred years before jesus' birth were zeus and apollo. both of these were usually portrayed as light-skinned greeks, and usually with light-brown or dark-blonde hair. there was a brisk trade in 'holy pictures' of both gods, and the commonest image seems have been of the face of the huge statue of zeus in the temple at olympia.

when christianity started to appear (around two hundred years after jesus' own death) there were no reliable images of jesus around (classical judaism had a mild prejudice against making images of human beings. the muslims carry this even further, which is why there are no images of mohammed or allah).

the holy picture salesmen had all these pictures of apollo and zeus (with light skin and blonde hair) which nobody wanted anymore. but if they had pictures of jesus they could have sold them like hot tamales.

once i was told that jesus belonged to the "ethinc" group (or something like that) of ther Essens, who were actully blonde with blue eyes, which is why that's the way he is portrayed.

we need to bear in mind though that in ancient times (like very ofte nowdays) being blonde with blue eyes was sign of beauty and physical appearance "reflected" the inner qualities. Greek gods/goddesses and heroes are often portrayed as blonde and the greeks are not usually blonde either...

A few key things from the Bible for you.

1. The Roman's need Judas to point out Jesus, because there was nothing about him physically that made him stand out from other Hebrews of the area. Meaning dark hair curly hair cut relatively short, a larger nose, most likely tanned do to his travels, and of medium height. Most likely he would also have had a beard by that age.

2. Jesus was a carpenter. Meaning he would have been a very physically strong man from working with wood using only hand tools. He would also have had very callused hands.

Also based on historic information considering that Jesus didn't learn of his heritage until he was full grown he would have no doubt had a wife though one is not listed for a man of that time period and of his religion (he was a jew after all) to be unmarried would have been something that would have been noted.

Also note that he wasn't born in December. For one thing the calender of the time was different then our current one, and add in several bits of information point to his birth being some time in the late summer early fall. Most likely September time period. He also had several brothers and sisters, though exact numbers are not known, at least one of which became a holy man himself.

The December date was picked by the Roman preists who eventually formed the Catholic church as it was already the festival for Roman Sun god and thus made it easier to convert whorshippers from paganism.

Note that Easter is also not the proper date. If you've ever wondered where the rabbit and the eggs come in its another Roman god switch. Easter is based on old fertility rights belonging to Estara who was a god adopted by Romans from an earlier conquered civilization.

Really alot of the normal information people take for granted about Jesus and the religion based around him isn't quite accurate.
