How long for hair to go fully gray (white) after onset?

For those who are old enough to have their hair be fully or nearly completely white, how many years did it take to get to that stage after you noticed that first strand? I noticed my first one about one year ago, but none since. I am a 26 year old male. I don't believe that the graying process has started for me, but I am wondering, how quickly did successive white hairs show up for you? Is the graying process like a switch turning on and then a steady rate from there on? Does it start with a stray hair here and there and then a couple of years later, the rate picks up? I'm just trying to figure out where I stand. Thanks.
